Incapable of making a WNBA roster, former LSU standout Alexis Morris joins the Globetrotters and plays abroad.
NEW YORK (AP) — Former LSU standout Alexis Morris has firsthand experience with the difficulty of making a WNBA team.
A few weeks after leading the Tigers to the 2023 national championship, the guard was selected by the Connecticut Sun in the second round of the draft, but he was waived prior to the start of the season.
Furthermore, Morris received no invitation to any of the camps this year when they started on Sunday.
But it hasn’t prevented her from playing hoops. Prior to accepting a contract with the Harlem Globetrotters in February, Morris lived abroad for a while.
Without a doubt. I can’t give up my dream since it’s mine,” she remarked. “I acknowledge my faults. I’ll keep working for it till I accomplish my objectives. Making the league is difficult.
Morris faced criticism for remarks she made following her dismissal from the company last year. She demanded that certain WNBA veterans step down to make room for incoming rookies, including herself. Morris claimed that she took the comments to heart.
Morris stated, “I don’t regret what I said, but I do wish I had articulated it better to reach people it should have.” “I didn’t have the veterans in mind.” I experienced what it’s like to have rookies that don’t honour the time you spent serving as a veteran at LSU. I wasn’t attempting to be that bumbling newcomer. I said what needed to be said. I was sorry about the way I phrased it.
During LSU’s championship season, the 5-foot-6 Morris averaged 15.6 points and was selected to the first team of the Southeastern Conference.
Morris expressed his desire for them to grow and provide more chances for the younger generation and talented players that aspire to play there.
The San Francisco Bay Area will host the WNBA’s thirteenth franchise in 2020–19, and commissioner Cathy Engelbert has stated that she intends to add three more clubs by 2028.
Sandy Brondello, the coach of the New York Liberty, stated, “It’s hard to make a roster now.” “There are a lot of incredibly gifted players who never get the chance.”
Morris keeps working on her game in the interim.
She currently plays with the Trotters after performing in France, Turkey, and Romania.
Initially, Morris stated, “I was not in the mental space to go play overseas after getting waived from the W.” “It was difficult to accept that I was leaving my place of origin at the time. I’m here right now, doing what I love to do.
Morris, who plays with the Globetrotters and is known as “The Show,” became the seventh female player in the 98-year history of the team. When she was twelve years old, an AAU coach gave her the nickname, and it stuck.
“Our ultimate goal is to change people’s perspectives and create millions of smiles, which is why we come out here every night to put on an amazing show for the fans and families,” Morris stated.
She has no plans to leave the Globetrotters in the near future. If she were to make a WNBA roster or camp, the organisation has stated that it will offer her more time.
“I intend to stay here forever,” she declared. For women who choose to remain in the United States, it is ideal. You can play in the WNBA after becoming a Harlem Globetrotter. Women have the ideal opportunity to remain in our nation.
Morris thinks other women may soon follow the Globetrotters because she loves their lifestyle.
She explained, “It’s another outlet for women.” “You still have the chance to train and improve your skills. It’s essential that you move and conduct like an expert.
