Harvey Elliott: We are aware that we need to make amends.
When Liverpool hosts Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday to start the final three Premier League games of the season, Harvey Elliott thinks the team is keen to make apologies.
The Reds go into the game knowing they will definitely finish in the top four, which guarantees them a spot in the Champions League the next season under Jürgen Klopp.
Elliott did admit that the previous few weeks had been frustrating, as their chances of winning the Premier League crown were thwarted by losses to Everton and Crystal Palace, and they were eliminated from the Europa League by a quarterfinal loss to Atalanta.
Additionally, the midfield player argues that Klopp’s team will not lack incentive to see the season out on a high note.
“The last couple of weeks haven’t gone the way we wanted them to, but unfortunately that’s part of football,” Elliott said to Liverpoolfc.com.
“We haven’t fulfilled our potential and we haven’t been good enough. After giving it some thought and studying it, the team as a whole has come to the conclusion that we must act immediately to make things right for everyone involved—including the supporters, the coach, and ourselves.
“We haven’t played well, but I think we have a great opportunity this weekend, especially at home where it’s been a long time since we’ve played at home.”
“We just need to finish strong now,” he said. We’ve all acknowledged that the last few weeks haven’t been the best for us, but we still have a few games remaining and a few chances to go out and make amends.
“We want to give it our all and enter the summer on a high note. All we have to do is concentrate on these next three games, make sure we win, and then take a summer break to regroup and think things through before playing again.
After finishing fifth last season, a win this weekend would guarantee Liverpool at least third place in the Premier League this year.
Elliott reflected on the advancements the Reds had made this season, which included winning the Carabao Cup in February: “We have qualified for the Champions League and won a trophy.”
“The season has had some positives, like how many young guys are getting opportunities and playing really, really well, which is really good to witness for us older players.
Although things didn’t go as planned towards the end of the season, we can still look back on it as a whole and be happy with where we are, especially given the circumstances and the rebuild.
“I think the squad has handled it amazing, even though it’s never easy.”
Elliott thinks the club will be well-prepared for the upcoming years with the experience and lessons they have gathered from this season.
The No. 19 stated, “[Now] it comes down to mentality and that hunger to go again.”
And since we are familiar with the circumstances, we want to ensure that it never occurs again by learning from our mistakes and the challenges of the past few weeks.
“This is a young team, and hopefully many of the players will be here in the future, so we can make amends and not let it happen again.”
Elliott anticipates a difficult matchup with Ange Postecoglou’s squad on Sunday, but he believes home advantage will be helpful.
Elliott declared, “The Spurs are a very good team with unbelievable players.” They usually give us a difficult game, but this is a fantastic chance to go out and attempt to make amends now more than ever.
“We’ve never played at home before, so it will be nice to have the support of our fans throughout the entire match. Hopefully, we can go out and prove to them and to ourselves that we can achieve the desired outcome.”
